Microsoft to drop Nokia and the "Phone" in Windows Phone

Microsoft plans on rebranding its mobile division and will be dropping the Nokia brand name and the "Phone" moniker in Windows Phone

Microsoft acquired Nokia's handset business division for $7.2 billion back in April and it plans on bringing major changes in future in the branding department. Microsoft plans to drop the "Nokia" brand name on all its future smartphones. Microsoft currently continues to use the Nokia brand name but it won't be the case in future. As per the latest leak of an internal document, future smartphones from Microsoft's stable will be called just Lumia devices rather than Nokia Lumia.

The report which has leaked this information further goes on to state that the "Phone" in Windows Phone will be dropped in future too. This will be done to unify the mobile operating system with Windows platform for other forms of devices such as tablets and personal computers. The Windows Phone branding will be replaced by just Windows. All future advertising and branding campaigns will let go of the popular "Nokia with Windows Phone" branding .

“As part of our phased transition, we will drop the manufacturer name from product references during the Holiday campaign.” This is what the leaked document states. The leaked document also shows Lumia written in Microsoft's Segoe font. Microsoft plans on launching a single mobile-focussed operating system which will be used on the tablets and smartphones. Both of them will come with the same Windows logo as the branding collateral.

The recently launched Lumi 730/735 and the Lumia 830 will probably be the last handsets from Microsoft's stable to feature the Nokia branding. Summing it up, the future devices will come with the Microsoft moniker, the new Windows logo and Lumia branding. Nokia's websites have already started to redirect the visitors to Microsoft's websites in various regards and a conscious effort is being made to phase out the Nokia branding. Nokia as a brand earned the trust of millions globally and finally it is coming to an end.

Apple Watch to arrive in 2015: Here are Top 5 alternatives that you can buy instead

We handpick the top 5 smartwatches that can be bought at an relatively lesser price as compared with the Apple Watch

Apple has been in the line of fire for launching its half baked Apple Watch. Apple released watch in different avatars and editions so that it will appeal to the taste of consumers. The different versions meant that they were designed to cater for people from different walks of life. Apple's Tim Cook was mum on the battery backup in the Apples Keynote which as it turned out to be was less than a day. Would you mind worrying if your watch runs out of juice before you hit the bed, well as a matter of fact I very well do mind. Let’s take a look at the other smartwatch offerings in the industry and see which one scores better.

1 LG GWatch

LGs G watch has a more contemporary look. The rectangular watch face looks simple and bland with no dashes of metal. The 1.65 inch screen has a good pixel density of 240ppi. The resolution is good and the icons are neatly laid out. The G Watch is water proof and can easily suffice a stint in shower or pool.

2. Moto 360

Moto 360 is one of the best looking smartwatches we have laid our eyes on. The circular dial is wrapped in metal encasing and this is the design element that sets it apart. The screen is protected by the corning Gorilla glass that will ward off unwanted scratches and protect the screen. There are however some apprehension about the battery backup of the Moto 360.

3. Asus Zenwatch

Asus unveiled their Zenwatch at a recently held event in IFA. The selling point of this watch is the ultra-affordable price tag of $199. This Smartwatch offers extreme value for money proposition when compared with the Moto 360 or the LG Gwatch. The watch is expected to foray in the Indian market in October this year with a price tag of 10-12k.

4. OnePlus OneWatch

OnePlus disrupted the premium smartphone market with its Flagship slayer the OnePlus One which locked horns with flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and proved to be a better buy. The OneWatch is also likely to follow the suit. The smartwatch is said to sport an oval dial much like the Moto 360 and is expected to come with a rugged Sapphire glass. It will also feature the wireless Qi charging technology.

5. Galaxy Gear

Samsung’s Galaxy Gear has been around the corner for long time before. The Gear is designed beautifully in a brushed aluminium body. Samsung gives you an option of choosing the straps as well. The OLED display has good viewing angles and the outdoor visibility is commendable.

Apple watch needs to be charged daily: Report

Apple watch would require a daily charge as per the latest report; fails to address the issue of battery life in smartwatches

Apple made quite a lot of noise when it launched the Apple watch at its iPhone 6 launch event. The smartwatch was off to a poor start from the masses due to its design but Apple insisted on the fact that it would fit right into the ecosystem and went on to explain the functionalities on offer. The Apple Watch witnesses quite an elaborate launch but what it didn't mention then was as to how long will the smartwatch last on a single charge.

Apple has now mentioned that the smartwatch's battery will last "about a day right now" which means that you would be required to charge it on a daily basis. Another thing that might happen is that Apple may increase the battery life when the smartwatch gets launched but Apple is known not to bring in changes in the final previewed versions of its devices. There surely is quite a lot of room for improvement in terms of battery life.

Having said that, its not like its Android Wear counterparts are doing any better either. Supposedly best smartwatch till date, the Moto 360 also lasts about a day on a single charge and the same holds true for many other as well. It is only the likes of the LG G Watch R and Samsung Gear Live which claim to work for 2 days on a single charge. The Apple Watch will hit the retail shelves in February 2015 so Apple has a fair bit of time to optimise the battery life of the smartwatch.

The exact battery figures of the smartwatch are not available as of now. Apple spokeswoman Nat Kerris regarding the issue has stated that, ““We anticipate that people will charge nightly which is why we designed an innovative charging solution that combines our MagSafe technology and inductive charging.” Apple is know to change the way things are done and with Android Wear missing out on battery life, we thought Apple might just take care of that issue. But as it turns out, that may not be the case.

Differentiate between iPhone 6 along with clones with this particular information

With iPhone knock offs flooding the internet, this is how you can separate them from the true thing

The next iPhone is coming before the end of the week which means that the rumour mill has gone in overdrive churning out photos of the alleged iPhone 6.

In a situation like this, how do you separate the news from the noise? iPhone clones are a dime a dozen with little to differentiate them from the original Apple smartphone.

We know that the iPhone 6 is likely to have a 4.7 inch screen. Armed with this information, the netizens have made it their duty to flood the internet with absurd mockups, iPhone clones or just badly photoshopped images.

Indeed, the GooPhone i6 is the iPhone 6 before the iPhone 6, at least in China. In a country flooded with knock offs, the GooPhone i6 is the perfect example of that. Based on the last design scheme of Apple, they have already released a 4.7 inch smartphone, nearly identical to Apple’s design. The Chinese company even audaciously threatened to sue Apple in China last year, when the i5 managed to hit the markets before the iPhone.

Some people are making an effort to help you separate the genuine leaks from the dummies and clones. French blogger Steve Hemmerstoffer has posted an image on his Twitter profile that makes for a handy guide in helping you identify the true iPhone.

While it is almost confirmed that Apple will launch two iPhone models this year, they both will probably share the same design philosophy.

iPad Air Vs Premium Shootout: Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4

We pit the two most sought after premium tablets - Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 vs iPad Air against each other and see how they fare

Tablets are being churned out by a slew of manufacturers at a rapid rate but it is the premium tablets that still dictate a considerable chunk of the tablet market share. These premium tablets are aimed at the corporates or working professionals for whom the portability factor plays a huge role in choosing the tablet. Apple have been charming consumers with their well-built and elegant tablets but Samsung and other manufacturers are catching up- proof being the latest Galaxy Tab S. We put the two together, to see if Samsung tablet can ideed rival the Apple beast.

Design and Build

Well we would have directly vouched for the iPad Air and snubbed the Galaxy when it comes to styling but this time Samsung has come up with a very neat design. They have typically done away with the cheap bits and added bold lines which make the Galaxy Tab S reek of elegance. The iPad Air embibes the traditional iPad design but when it comes to dimensions then it is much thinner and lighter than its predecessors.

The Galaxy Tab S looks brilliant from the front and the Samsung’s Signature physical key is shrunk and yet it looks extremely proportionate. The boundaries are wrapped with finely chiseled chrome strip that are less pronounced yet make their point. The rear has the same puckered texture that we find in the Galaxy S5. No odd bits or shiny plastics this time!

iPad Air looks extremely sleek with seldom touches of Metal and the simplistic design approach. The best thing about this Tablet is its drastically reduced Weight and Form factor. The Rear is finished in metallic color and the center houses the seemingly large Apple Logo. The rear looks a tad too bland with nothing but no man’s land.

Screen

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 has an 8.4 inch Super Amoled screen set to display at 1600 x 2560 pixels translating into a superlative pixel density of 359 ppi. The touch is super responsive and the color reproduction is something we still can’t stop drooling over. Viewing angles are perfect with no sorry bits.

Apple has always ensured that it fits the idevices with the best display and the iPad Air is no different. iPad Air has an enormous 9.7 inch screen that has a resolution of 1536 x 2048 translating into a modest pixel density of 264ppi. The viewing angles are good and the screen looks lucid but somehow the depth and the reality we see in the Galaxy Tab S are missing from the Air. The Screen has an oleo phobic scratch resistant coating as well.

Camera

Cameras have been becoming equally important in Tablets as well and having said that the Galaxy Tab S comes with a 8megapixel primary camera along with LED flash and a 2.1 megapixel secondary camera. The image quality is impeccable and something we previously didn’t witness in the Samsung Tablets.

iPad Air sports a 5Megapixel primary camera along with an precise Autofocus mechanism that is extremely fast. The iSight camera ensures that the pictures are well lit without over exposing them. Secondary camera is a mediocre 2.1Megapixel sensor which is still sufficient for occasional selfies and Facetime. The only qualm is the missing LED flash.

Under the Hood

Samsung Galaxy Tab S is fitted with a powerful Snapdragon 800 processor that is fine tuned to produce 2.3GHz. The mighty processor is coupled with a 3GB RAM which is responsible for the Tab S beastly performance characteristics. The UI flow is butter smooth and everything about this Tablet just feels so good.

The iPad Air sports a 1.3GHz Dual Core A7 processor and a GB of DDR3 RAM. Although specification wise the Air might look puny but it isn’t as its one of the fastest tablets that we have ever laid our hands upon, Courtesy the frugality of the iOS. Gaming is excellent with no lags or choppy frame shifts.

Connectivity and Battery

When it comes to connectivity both the Tablets are equally well equipped with all the connectivity options you will need. Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.7 comes equipped with 4G LTE, 3G, Wifi, Bluetooth and GPS.

The Air comes with similar options and an extremely impressive 8600 mAh battery that lasts for more than 10 hours. This is the best part of the Air.

Pricing and Verdict

Apple iPad Air is currently retailing at Rs 32,299 for the 16GB version on the other hand the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 retails at Rs 36,023. The Samsung has done an excellent job in churning out a high end tablet. It has an excellent screen, one of the best build and design and extremely efficient camera units. If your family is in need of a simple and easy to use premium tablets then go for the Tab S.

The iPad Air has a certain dash of elegance and an unparalleled brand value. The compact form factor ensures that it won’t be a task carrying it around. The screen and the touch responsiveness is one of the best in the tablet industry. The only setback is the absence of the flash otherwise if you desire an extremely thin tablet that can be your daily driver then go for the iPad Air.

Apple iPhone 6 latest news, whispers, characteristics, release day in addition to price tag with Asia

KYMI rounds up everything there is to know about Apple’s next best offering, the much anticipated iPhone 6

Apple ties up Mastercard, AmEx and Visa for iPhone Wallet

Apple is trying to create a really wide ecosystem of services in future. One of the first steps it has taken in the direction of the same is tying up with the juggernauts of banking: Mastercard, Visa and American Express. It is doing so for its iPhone Wallet and is planning to tie up with a wide array of retailers and banks to make the iPhone Wallet service a successful and a widely used service.

The tie up talks are still private and will be made official at the launch event to be held on September 9 where Apple plans on launching the iPhone 6. Apple is believed to have installed a specific hardware in the devices which can securely store the information about the financial credentials of the user. The service will be called iWallet in all probability and will make use of Near Field Communication (NFC) to make payments.

Google has been trying to use mobile phones as a payment method in US stores for a while but the adoption has been pretty slow. But when Apple tries doing things differently, it actually ends up bringing about a change. The TouchID sensor is expected to get more functionalities in the iPhone 6 and using it for mobile payments will surely be on top of the list of added functionalities.

What the introduction of the service will do is that Apple will be able to leverage the database of financial credentials it has courtesy of its iTunes. And iTunes is just a tip of the iceberg as the retail market is pretty vast compared to what it offers. The mobile transaction market is on the rise but the issue of entering the details every now and then into cramped screens keeps people away from it. When Apple does this, the world follows so when it launches the payment service, it might even go on to become a trend as well.

iPhone latest news and rumours

Even since the release of the iPhone 5S, the iPhone 5C and the iOS 7, the question on everyone’s mind has been: What’s next? The tech world has been abuzz with leaks and rumours about Apple’s next flagship smartphone. We round up everything that is known about and expected on the iPhone 6.

  • iPhone 6 Release Date

Since Apple has just recently unveiled the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C, it is likely to wait a while before it launches another smartphone. However, the iPhone 6 seems to be more of an addition to the tech giant’s line-up as a standalone device rather than a replacement for a current model. As Expert Reviews reports, it is quite likely then that Apple waits it out till 2014 to release the new handset, but instead of waiting for the second quarter of the year, releases it somewhere between March and May.

If Apple does follow this time line, it will also take away some of Samsung’s glory; the Korean tech giant is expected to launch the Galaxy S5 right about then. Given that the iPhone 6 has already been leaked, this could be a very real possibility.

  • iPhone 6 Display

The big question on everyone’s mind is whether Apple will give in to popular demand and go big on its next iPhone. Given that’s the current compact size of its handset is also much appreciated and the fact that its competitors are going large, Apple is likely to try and make everyone happy. Keeping the iPhone 5S at its current size for those who prefer smaller handsets, it is expected to up the size of the iPhone 6. Rumours point mostly at a 4.8-inch display, though some suggest a 4.5-inch or a 5-inch sizing too.

On a larger handset, Apple loyalists are likely to finally get what a number of them have been demanding for a while now: a Full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Since Tim Cook had spoken earlier about not trading off on other aspects of display quality in order to go large in size, Apple is expected to strike a good balance between largeness and features like brightness, clarity, reflection, colour etc.

12. 9 in . ipad tablet Professional to determine a young 2015 release

Apple is working on an all new top of the line 12.9 inch iPad Pro which is expected to be launched in early 2015

Apple was the company which actually revived the tablet arena and went on to make it one of the most popular segments in the digital arena. It is due to launch the next generation of the iPad Air and iPad Mini 2 later this year but the two will be joined in by a new family member early next year. This will be the iPad Pro which will come with a screen size of 12.9 inch would make it one of the biggest tablets on sale.

As per the latest reports, the tablet will go into production in early 2015 and the same will be followed by a launch in the first quarter of the year itself. The iPad Air and Mini's next generations have already gone into production so it is only a matter of time before we see them getting launched. Currently Apple has 9.7 and 7.9 inch offerings. The 12.9 inch offering is expected to be a professional tablet and will feature a high pixel density which would near Ultra High Definition.

The iOS 8 will feature split screen functionality on the tablets and it will be put to maximum use in this mammoth tablet. It will borrow its design philosophy from the iPad Air. Apple seems to have come at terms with the fact that consumers are looking for bigger screen devices with more functionalities. This is precisely the reason as to why the company plans on launching two iPhones this year with one having a display size of 4.7 inches while the other one would have a screen size of 5.5 inches.

The iPad is the second largest source of revenue for Apple after the iPhone but the tablet sales have been plummeting due to consumers prefering bigger screen smartphones instead. Apple was the one who breathed new life into the segment of tablets and the onus of doing the same again rests on its shoulders. There is no further infornation available regarding the tablet or its specs. Stay tuned to KYMI for all the technology related news.
